Example: Trying to keep up with me? I’ll give you a run for your money.
Origin: There are two different schools of thought as to where this expression may have originated. The first comes from hunting, where a “run” would literally mean to go after game. Now, hunting is an expensive sport and if you bagged enough animals, you would get “a run for your money.” The second ties back to horse racing – also an expensive sport – where the horses would literally “run” for the bettor’s money. Take your pick. Both are pretty interesting in my book.
